How do you wear a suspender belt?

From classic to wearable

The garter belt has been around for more than a century and was once purely functional: there was simply no other way to keep stockings in place. Since the arrival of hold-ups and tights, it has become a choice rather than a necessity. That is precisely why it is now mainly a style choice.

Yet for many people, the practical side is a stumbling block. How tight should the belt be, where should the clips go, and what about the panties?

Where the belt should sit

The belt sits on the hips, just below the waist, and should remain horizontal. If it slips down at the front as soon as you fasten the clips, it is too loose or the stockings are pulling too hard.

A belt should fit firmly without pinching. If you can fit two fingers underneath without difficulty, it fits correctly.

Fastening the clips

A clip consists of a metal or plastic loop with a button. Slide the top of the stocking through the loop and press the button into the opening.

  1. Put on both stockings first and make sure they are smooth, without twisting.
  2. Start with the front clips. Grip the fabric slightly below the edge, not the edge itself. The most tension is on the edge, so it is more likely to tear there.
  3. Then fasten the back clips. Check in the mirror that the seam, if there is one, runs straight.
  4. Check the tension. The band may be slightly taut, but the stocking should not be pulled into a point.

Does your belt have six or eight clips? Distribute the tension evenly instead of making the front two do all the work.

Under or over the panties?

Practically speaking: over them. That way, you can pull down your panties without undoing the clips. This is why they have traditionally been worn that way.

If you are choosing purely based on appearance, wearing the panties under the belt works too. The straps then run over the fabric, creating a more streamlined look. There is no rule, only a difference in convenience.

Which stockings should you pair with it?

With a garter belt, wear classic stockings, without a silicone band. Hold-ups can work technically, but then you are wearing two systems on top of each other that interfere with one another.

Pay attention to the length. The stocking should come well over the thigh; otherwise, the clips will be pulled diagonally upward and the belt will slip down at the front.

Four things that make the difference

  • Six clips sit more securely than four. More attachment points mean less pulling force at each point.
  • Adjustable straps are not a luxury. The difference between sitting and standing is about three centimetres.
  • Adjust the belt while sitting and standing. What feels right when standing may pull when sitting.
  • Choose the stockings first, then the belt. The colour of the top edge often determines which belt looks best with them.
